Red Hill Camp - Action Heritage
Preserving local Indigenous history.
Red Hill Camp is colloquially known as ‘the last campsite of the Ngunnawal’. It’s a small patch of land located in the suburb of Red Hill in Canberra.
From 2015 - 17 a student-led research project was conducted on the area; a collaboration between the Australian National University and Canberra’s Traditional Custodian groups.
I designed a visitors’ guide to Red Hill Camp for Action Heritage to highlight the work they had completed and what was uncovered at the dig. This helped the locals learn more about the Indigenous history in their area.
“Well in my time, as a little girl, I came here with my grandparents who were doing domestic work for people around here, for the elite. We'd come with the horse and sulky from Yass. We’d camp here 'cause there's a creek running down there from the Grammar School. We'd take our horse Poppy down to the creek and she would have a drink and wander around.”
