Packaging design - Australian Honours & Awards
Commemorating 50 years of celebrating Australians.
For this project I designed packaging for two different products commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Australian Honours & Awards System.
Due to the rich history of the award system, I was able to access concept sketches and watercolour gouaches created by Stuart Devlin - the original designer of the medals and awards in the 1970’s. These were scanned in at a high resolution and used within the packaging.
I used a watercolour background to link to the original watercolour gouaches, and layered the concept sketches for a textured background. Coloured watercolour gouaches of three of the most recognisable medals were placed as the design focus. The background includes signatures from Stuart Devlin, as well as design approval signatures from Queen Elizabeth II.
Our stakeholder initially wanted to focus on several different aspects of their program; which resulted in confusing messaging. My team and I steered them towards focusing on one strong message to ensure the packaging was as clear and precise as possible. In the end, leaning on their extensive history was the strongest link to commemorate their anniversary.
